“The Orton-Gillingham Approach”

Your key to literacy success

The Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach is a structured, multisensory, and evidence-based method designed to teach reading, writing, and spelling to individuals with language-based learning differences such as dyslexia. Lessons are personalized, sequential, and cumulative—ensuring that students master foundational literacy skills before moving on. At its heart, OG instruction is diagnostic and prescriptive, adapting to meet the unique needs of each learner while fostering confidence and progress.

Is it a good Fit?

We believe that trust and connection are essential to successful learning. A paid trial period is offered to determine if the student-practitioner relationship is a good fit. This allows both parties to ensure that the student feels supported, safe, and engaged in their learning journey.

Your Child's Orton-Gillingham Journey with LifeTree Learning: What to Expect

Embarking on an Orton-Gillingham (OG) program at LifeTree Learning in Surrey, BC, is a proactive step towards building your child's literacy confidence and skills. Here’s a brief overview of what this journey typically involves:

1. Getting Started: Consultation & Assessment

Your journey begins with an initial consultation to discuss your child's needs and learning history. If OG is a good fit, we conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify specific strengths and challenges in reading, spelling, and writing. This isn't a pass/fail test but a crucial tool to design a personalized learning plan.

2. Tailored Learning & Structured Lessons

Based on the assessment, we create a unique Orton-Gillingham plan tailored specifically for your child. For optimal progress, we recommend a minimum of two one-on-one sessions per week, each lasting 60 minutes.

During these sessions, your child will engage in structured, multisensory activities. This means learning through sight, sound, touch, and movement to make concepts stick. Lessons include reviewing past material, explicitly teaching new skills (like sounds or spelling rules), and practicing reading and spelling in a positive, supportive environment.

3. Program Duration & Commitment

Orton-Gillingham is an intensive intervention designed for lasting results, not a quick fix. The program duration varies per child, depending on individual needs and goals. The aim is to equip your child with the skills to manage academic tasks confidently and independently.

4. Monitoring Progress & Staying Connected

Your child's progress is continuously monitored during each lesson. We believe in a strong parent-instructor partnership, so you can expect regular informal updates and more formal progress discussions at scheduled intervals. We’ll discuss achievements and how you can support learning at home. With your permission, we can also collaborate with your child's school.

At LifeTree Learning, we're committed to providing certified Orton-Gillingham instruction in a nurturing environment. We partner with you and your child every step of the way towards literacy success.
